Launch of new knowledge base called knowH2O providing a digital resource for the water industry

knowH2O is the very first digital knowledge base for professional training tailored to the requirements of the water industry. Aided by the law firm Becker Büttner Held (BBH), the knowledge base goes live today. It is designed to provide the expert knowledge water industry staff need, right at their fingertips and available at any time.

The digital knowledge base for the water industry – knowH2O – will be launched today. It spans the entire range of disciplines that together make up the water industry, including particularly law, science, engineering and economics. Leading experts provide information on current topics and practical knowledge in videos, podcasts and interviews. knowH2O is right at one’s fingertips and available at any time: from a desktop computer, tablet or smartphone – at the dam, in the water works, at the sewage treatment plant, in the office, in the car or at home. So much for the idea; the three minds behind knowH2O are hydrogeologist Dr. Hella Runge, Dr. Juliane Thimet, director at Bayerischer Gemeindetag (the association of Bavarian municipalities), and Beate Kramer, lawyer and partner counsel at BBH.

Companies from the water industry have to respond to ever changing and increasingly more complex challenges. The EU Water Framework Directive affects the granting of water rights. The EU Drinking Water Directive is going to change several laws and ordinances in Germany. The sewage charge as a financing instrument will be rethought. The legal framework at EU and national level is changing. And so are the technical regulations. Increasing competition for specialists and skilled workers, demographic change, digitalisation and climate change also require adjustments including but not limited to the infrastructure.

“The water industry will have to figure out how to take on these challenges, what appropriate structures could look like and which funding options are available. This is where knowH2O comes into play,” says Daniel Schiebold, partner in charge of the water practice at BBH.

“Today’s water industry has to keep an eye on the entire water cycle: After all, there is an inextricable link between bodies of water, water and wastewater,” says Dr. Hella Runge. “In order to adequately respond to each and any challenge as well as to flexible working, the water industry needs not only fresh knowledge but also a new way of acquiring it,” adds Beate Kramer. “The knowH2O knowledge base is just that, it provides knowledge in digital form at any time while also personally addressing its users,” notes Dr. Juliane Thimet.
