German Bundestag invites BBH partner Dr. Dörte Fouquet to provide her expertise on matters of nuclear law

In the framework of the public hearing held today in the Bundestag, the Committee on the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety discussed the revision of the Atomic Energy Act (Atomgesetz). Among the invited experts was lawyer Dr. Dörte Fouquet, who contributed her expertise in international nuclear law.

The nuclear phase-out taken to its logical conclusion? The legislative draft of the parliamentary group of BÜNDNIS 90/DIE GRÜNEN provides for a phase-out of nuclear power by the end of 2022 which includes the shut-down of facilities for uranium enrichment and the production of fuel assemblies. The legislative draft is supplemented by a motion of the parliamentary group of DIE LINKE calling for a decommissioning of the uranium enrichment plant in Gronau and the fuel fabrication facility in Lingen as well as an export ban for nuclear fuels. Both initiatives were addressed in the public hearing in the Bundestag today.

The Atomic Energy Act had already been amended earlier this year; the amendment in July implemented the requirements stipulated by the Federal Constitutional Court (Bundesverfassungsgericht) in the proceedings at the end of 2016 relating to the nuclear phase-out. The amendment process had also encompassed a hearing of experts to which, among others, BBH partner Dr. Olaf Däuper had been invited.
