Climate transition in light of changed circumstances: BBH discusses further course of action with representatives from business and politics

On 26 April 2022, the law firm Becker Büttner Held (BBH) will host its traditional annual conference in Berlin. Together with high-profile guests from business and politics, BBH partners Prof. Christian Held and Prof. Dr. Ines Zenke will discuss the implications of the war in Ukraine for the supply of energy and the transition to a climate-neutral economy.

The Russia-Ukraine-conflict and its geopolitical repercussions call into question former certainties. Ensuring a secure, reasonably-priced, consumer-friendly, efficient and environmentally sound grid-bound supply of energy, as required by the German Energy Industry Act (EnWG), is becoming more and more of a challenge. Supply shortages of natural gas, our bridging technology, and any strategies to compensate for such shortages are on everyone’s lips.

The overarching aim remains the same: Climate neutrality in Germany and the EU requires a fundamental transformation of our infrastructures. The German traffic light coalition has presented its first legislative proposals and announced to release entire legislative packages. One of the things still to be clarified is the fundamental question of how to convert natural gas grids to transport hydrogen.

What are the implications of the global political situation currently unfolding with regard to the climate transition, and what could be appropriate responses? These are but a few of the issues BBH will be addressing in this year’s conference.

Among others, the following speakers will provide input to the debate: Jürgen Trittin, Member of the Bundestag and an experienced politician in foreign affairs and environmental issues, and MEP Jens Geier, rapporteur of the European Parliament on the European Strategy for Hydrogen, who plays an active role in the current debate concerning the unbundling of hydrogen grids. Dr. Alexander Götz, Deputy CEO of the German Association of Local Utilities (VKU), is going to shed light on how the municipal industry plans to position itself in the future.
