BBH GROUP PARTNERS WITH “CEO DER ZUKUNFT”, A NEWLY LAUNCHED INITIATIVE TO CLOSE THE ANTICIPATED LEADERSHIP GAP IN MUNICIPAL COMPANIES

The BBH group supports the newly launched “CEO der Zukunft” initiative, a cross-mentoring programme created to close the anticipated leadership gap in municipal companies.

Demographic change is putting the municipal sector under increasing pressure. According to the 2024 edition of the survey “Stadtwerke-Studie” conducted by the German Association of Energy and Water Industries (BDEW) and others, more than half of today’s managing directors of municipal utility companies are set to retire within the next five to seven years. Alongside a growing shortage of skilled professionals, this will create a significant gap at the executive level.

This is exactly where the new cross-company initiative for future CEOs comes into play – a cross-mentoring programme that connects selected executive management talent with 30 top-tier CEOs of municipal companies, creating a platform to develop a diverse, capable and future-ready generation of chief executives.

The BBH group supports the programme, acting both as a strategic partner and a key driver. The BBH group offers, among others, executive seminars that provide the mentees with practical insights into key areas such as regulation, transformation and legally sound corporate governance (compliance, employment and labour law etc.), contributing to their successful professional development.

“Especially in times of fundamental transformation, municipal companies need leaders who are well-equipped and capable of thinking strategically. At the BBH group, we are committed to empowering the CEOs of the future to navigate and shape the complexities of legal, economic and political landscapes”, says Prof. Dr. Ines Zenke, lawyer and partner with the BBH group.

Initiators of the programme are Prof. Dr. Friedemann Schulz von Thun, communication psychologist, and Dr. Jens Meier, CEO of the municipal utility company Stadtwerke Lübeck Gruppe. Felix Schulz von Thun will be head of the programme.

The executive development programme combines three major building blocks:

1. One-on-one mentoring by experienced CEOs of municipal companies
2. Leadership training with The Schulz von Thun Institute for Communication
3. Executive seminars by partners such as the BBH group, Siemens Energy, DZ Bank and others
