BBH group participates in the establishment of the Association of Hydrogen Regions (BdWR) – lending a strong voice to hydrogen regions

The establishment of the Association of Hydrogen Regions (Bund der Wasserstoffregionen – BdWR) was announced at this year’s HyLand Symposium. The BBH group co-developed the idea.

The energy transition is impossible without hydrogen. The HyLand programme supports 55 regions in developing regional hydrogen infrastructures since there is particular potential in the regional production of H2. This concerns the transport sector as producing hydrogen within close proximity to the consumer is much more cost-effective. In addition, public and municipal companies are particularly essential in paving the way for zero-emission transport at the regional level. Furthermore, developing regional hydrogen concepts is also significant for the entire municipal heat transition, whether for providing heat in houses, process heat for commercial areas or as a substance for special chemical processes. Up to now, these potentials have not been sufficiently incorporated into the discussion on the energy transition at the federal and state level in Germany.

It is necessary to bridge the gaps between the existing structures and strategies. To pool the needs of many regional stakeholders, BBH Consulting AG – part of the BBH group – has supported NOW GmbH and ifok GmbH in developing a concept for the Association of Hydrogen Regions. Leading municipal associations such as the German Technical and Scientific Association for Gas and Water (DVGW) and the German Association of Local Public Utilities (VKU) have already confirmed their participation in the Association of Hydrogen Regions. All HyLand regions are welcome to join this initiative and work together to promote the importance and potential of the regional hydrogen economy.

Marcel Malcher, board member of BBH Consulting, is pleased with the result of the productive cooperation with NOW: “The Association of Hydrogen Regions is the obvious result of successful work within the HyLand programme and provides an ideal platform to address the complexity of regional hydrogen concepts. We are proud to have been involved in this project from the very beginning.” Dr. Hanno Butsch, Partner Counsel at BBH Consulting AG and expert for strategy and concept development in the area of hydrogen and fuel cell technology, is convinced: “The unique thing about the Association of Hydrogen Regions is that the proposed solutions for regional concerns originated directly with the involved stakeholder at the regional level. The Association of Hydrogen Regions will ensure that the interests of the regions are safeguarded at the federal level so that the potential of the hydrogen industry is taken into account. We are happy to provide our expertise.”
