All eyes on the grids: 16th regulatory conference gathers grid industry in Berlin

The law firm Becker Büttner Held (BBH) sent out the invites for the 16th regulatory conference of the AK REGTP in Berlin on 17 May 2022 to discuss the current challenges in the grid sector. Numerous significant stakeholders from across the industry will attend the conference, and Klaus Müller, the new president of the Federal Network Agency (Bundesnetzagentur), will also join the event.

Being the link between its members and the regulatory authorities as well as the legislator, BBH’s regulatory working group AK REGTP has been actively encouraging and promoting the exchange of views and ideas as well as open discussions for more than 18 years. And discussion is needed now more than ever. This is because strong energy grids are crucial on the way to a climate-neutral energy supply by 2035. Are our infrastructures fit for the challenge of the climate transition, and is the current regulatory framework future-proof?

The regulatory conference brings together various parties and perspectives, among others, representatives from the three branches of state authority, i.e. the legislature, the executive and the judiciary, to discuss these questions. Klaus Müller, president of the Federal Network Agency, will speak about the latest as well as the required regulatory developments, while Ingbert Liebing, CEO of the Germany Association of Local Utilities (VKU), is going to address the situation at the distribution system level and shed light on the requirements of a climate-neutral grid system. Anne-Christin Frister, presiding judge at the Higher Regional Court (OLG) of Düsseldorf, is going to speak about the regulatory case law of the senate, while Elisabeth Kopp from the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK) will provide an overview of the ongoing legislative activities. Last but not least, BBHC board member Peter Bergmann will share his insights on the current state of play regarding the digitalisation of grid operation and present, for the very first time, the findings of the latest BBH study on the digital transformation.
